MEKONG DELTAとは？バンドの結成と進化の軌跡

MEKONG DELTA（メコン・デルタ）は、ドイツ出身のプログレッシヴ・スラッシュ・メタル・バンドです。バンドは1985年に、ベーシストでありプロデューサーでもあるラルフ・ヒューバート（Ralf Hubert）<Ba>によって結成されました。当初、RAGEの前身バンドAVENGERのレコーディングエンジニアだったラルフ・ヒューバートが、メンバーのヨルグ・マイケル（Jorg Micahel）<Dr>と意気投合しプロジェクトとして始まりました。

バンドの初期メンバーは匿名性を保っており、音楽に焦点を当てるためにメンバーの詳細を公表しませんでした。デビューアルバム『Mekong Delta』（1987年）では、テクカルなスラッシュメタルでしたが、続く2ndアルバム『The Music of Erich Zann』（1988年）、3rdアルバム『The Principle of Doubt』（1989年）では、クラシカルなオーケストレーションとスラッシュメタルの融合を確立しました。

1992年には『Kaleidoscope』を発表し、クラシック音楽の影響をさらに強めました。1994年には『Visions Fugitives』、1997年にはモデスト・ムソルグスキーの“展覧会の絵”を再現したカヴァーアルバム『Pictures at an Exhibition』をバンドの集大成として発表しましが、この時期にはメンバーチェンジが頻繁に発生し、活動はやや停滞することになりバンドは一時的に活動を休止しました。

ラルフ・ヒューバートは音楽活動から距離を置きましたが、2005年頃から復帰を模索し始めました。そして2007年、約10年ぶりにアルバム『Lurking Fear』をリリースし、MEKONG DELTAは本格的に再始動しました。

2010年にはスタジオアルバム『Wanderer on the Edge of Time』を発表し、再びプログレッシヴ・スラッシュメタルの最前線へと戻り、2014年には『In a Mirror Darkly』を発表し、2016年には『Tales of a Future Past』の制作を開始。2020年にこのアルバムがリリースされ、現在もバンドは精力的に活動を続けています。

MEKONG DELTAの音楽は、テクニカルなスラッシュメタルとクラシック音楽の融合が特徴であり、特にクラシカルなアレンジの巧みさが際立っています。その実験的なアプローチは、他のプログレッシヴ・メタルバンドにも影響を与えました。また、バンドの楽曲は難解でありながらも構築美に優れ、多くのスラッシュメタルファンやプログレッシヴメタル愛好者から高く評価されています。
