NILE（ナイル）とは？エジプト神話を描くブルータル・デスメタルバンド

NILE（ナイル）は、1993年にアメリカ合衆国サウスカロライナ州グリーンビルで結成されたブルータル/テクニカル・デス・メタル・バンドです。エジプト神話や古代文明をテーマにした独自のコンセプトと、超高速かつ緻密な演奏技術で知られ、デスメタル史における唯一無二の存在として高く評価されています。

NILEは、カール・サンダース（Karl Sanders）<Vo,Gt,Ba,Key>を中心に結成されました。初期のデモ作品やEP『Festivals of Atonement』（1995年）でアンダーグラウンドシーンにその名を轟かせ、1998年にデビュ―アルバム『Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka』をリリースします。このアルバムは、エジプト神話や古代文化を題材にした歌詞と壮大な楽曲構成で注目を集め、ブルータル・デスメタル界に新たな潮流を生み出しました。

2000年の2ndアルバム『Black Seeds of Vengeance』で、NILEは一気に国際的な評価を獲得します。圧倒的なスピード、複雑なリフ、そして神話的世界観が融合した本作は、ブルータル・デスメタルの金字塔とされました。続く3rdアルバム『In Their Darkened Shrines』（2002年）は、より壮大で叙情的な展開を見せ、ファンからも高い支持を得ます。2005年には『Annihilation of the Wicked』を発表し、その地位を揺るぎないものとしました。

その後も精力的に活動を続け、『Ithyphallic』（2007年）、『Those Whom the Gods Detest』（2009年）、『At the Gate of Sethu』（2012年）などを発表しました。これらの作品では、ブルータルさを保ちながらもテクニカルな要素をさらに進化させ、民族楽器や中東音楽スケールを大胆に取り入れることで、唯一無二の音楽性を確立していきます。

近年では『What Should Not Be Unearthed』（2015年）、『Vile Nilotic Rites』（2019年）、『The Underworld Awaits Us All』（2024年）といったアルバムをリリースし、NILEは依然としてブルータル・デスメタルの最前線に立ち続けています。世界中でのツアーを通じて、圧倒的なライブパフォーマンスを披露し続けており、後進バンドにも多大な影響を与えています。
