MY DYING BRIDEとは？バンド結成から現在までの歴史

MY DYING BRIDE（マイ・ダイイング・ブライド）は、1990年にイングランド北部のブラッドフォードで結成された、ゴシック／ドゥーム・メタル・バンドです。重厚で哀愁に満ちたサウンドと、死・愛・喪失といったダークなテーマを描く詩的な歌詞によって、世界中のメタルファンから高い評価を受けています。

バンドは、アーロン・スタインソープ（Aaron Stainthorpe）<Vo>とアンドリュー・クレイガン（Andrew Craighan）<Gt>を中心に結成され、1991年にデモ音源『Towards the Sinister』を発表。その後、Peaceville Recordsと契約し、1992年にデビューアルバム『As the Flower Withers』をリリースしました。この作品は、デス・メタルの攻撃性にドゥームの遅重なリフ、そしてバイオリンによる叙情性を融合させた革新的な内容で、アンダーグラウンド・シーンに衝撃を与えました。

特に1993年の2ndアルバム『Turn Loose the Swans』で彼らは音楽的完成度を一気に高め、ゴシック・ドゥーム・メタルというジャンルを確立しました。本作では、グロウルとクリーンヴォーカルの巧みな使い分けや、バイオリンの美しさが際立っており、現在でも代表作として語り継がれています。

1995年には『The Angel and the Dark River』を発表し、デス・メタル色を抑えつつ、より悲劇的で荘厳な雰囲気を強める方向へと進化。以降も『Like Gods of the Sun』（1996）、『The Light at the End of the World』（1999）など高評価のアルバムを発表し、ドゥーム・メタル界の重鎮としての地位を築いていきました。

2000年代以降はメンバー交代や活動の一時休止なども経験しながら、常に作品ごとに音楽性を深化させてきました。2020年には『The Ghost of Orion』をリリースし、長年のファンからも新たなリスナーからも注目を集めました。

MY DYING BRIDEは、同じイギリス出身のPARADISE LOST、ANATHEMAと共に“ドゥーム三銃士”と称され、ゴシック・メタルおよびドゥーム・メタルの礎を築いたバンドとして広く認知されています。30年以上にわたり、暗黒美と叙情を兼ね備えた独自の世界観を貫いてきた彼らの存在は、今なお世界のメタル・シーンに深い影響を与え続けています。
