INCANTATION（インカンテイション）とは？バンド結成から現在までの歴史

INCANTATION（インカンテイション）は、アメリカ合衆国・ニュージャージー州フェアローンで結成されたデス・メタル・バンドです。重厚かつ暗黒的なサウンドでシーンに大きな影響を与えてきた存在で、オールドスクール・デスメタルの中でも特にドゥーミーで邪悪な音像を特徴とし、現在に至るまでそのスタイルを貫き続けています。

バンドは1989年に、元REVENANTのジョン・マクエンティー（John McEntee）<Vo,Gt>を中心にスタートしました。初期はメンバーチェンジを繰り返しながらデモ音源を制作し、アンダーグラウンド・シーンで注目を集めていきます。そして1992年、デビュー・アルバム『Onward to Golgotha』を発売。この作品はデスメタル史に残る名盤として高く評価され、INCANTATIONの名を一躍世界へと広めました。重苦しく不穏なリフとスローパートを多用した構成は、後のデスメタルやドゥーム・デスに多大な影響を与えています。

1994年には2ndアルバム『Mortal Throne of Nazarene』を発売し、より重厚で荘厳なサウンドへと進化します。その後も『Diabolical Conquest』（1998年）、『The Infernal Storm』（2000年）といった作品を発売し、ブルータルかつ暗黒性を強めたスタイルを確立していきました。この時期はメンバーの入れ替えが激しかったものの、ジョン・マクエンティーを中心にバンドの核は揺らぐことなく維持されました。

2000年代に入ると、『Blasphemy』（2002年）、『Decimate Christendom』（2004年）、『Primordial Domination』（2006年）などを発売し、安定した活動を続けます。サウンドは一貫してダークで重厚ながら、楽曲構成や演奏面での成熟が感じられるようになり、ベテランバンドとしての地位を確立しました。

2010年代には『Vanquish in Vengeance』（2012年）、『Dirges of Elysium』（2014年）、『Profane Nexus』（2017年）といったアルバムを発売し、現代のデスメタル・シーンにおいても強い存在感を放ち続けます。特に『Profane Nexus』は初期の邪悪さと現代的なプロダクションを融合させた作品として高い評価を受けました。

さらに2020年には『Sect of Vile Divinities』を発売し、衰えを感じさせない攻撃性とダークさを提示します。2023年には13thアルバム『Unholy Deification』を発表し、バンドの原点回帰とも言える邪悪なデスメタルを現代的なサウンドで再構築しました。この作品は長年のファンのみならず、新たなリスナー層からも支持を集めています。

INCANTATIONは、単なるオールドスクール・デスメタルの代表格にとどまらず、ジャンルの進化と深化に貢献してきた重要なバンドです。その圧倒的な音の重さと邪悪な世界観は、今後もデスメタル・シーンにおいて語り継がれていく存在と言えるでしょう。
